Canadian upstream deal activity saw a significant uptick in 2016 but was largely left behind by the market recovery seen in the US and—late in the year—outside North America. Upstream deal values in Canada increased 45% to US$16.1 billion last year vs. US$11.1 billion in 2015 while the overall deal count (including transactions without disclosed values) increased 12% to 149 from 133, according to the PLS Global M&A Database.
