BHP Billiton is a global diversified natural resources company headquartered in Melbourne, Australia and with a major management office in London, United Kingdom. It is the world's largest mining company measured by revenue and as of February 2011 was the world's third-largest company measured by market capitalisation.

On July 14 2011, BHP Billiton announced that it would acquire Petrohawk Energy of the United States for approximately $12.1 billion in cash, considerably expanding its shale natural gas resources.

BHP Billiton completed the acquisition of Petrohawk Energy Corporation in August of 2011.
